Can’t Buy Me Love may not be my favorite Beatles song, but it is an important one.  The entire soundtrack – and movie – A Hard Day’s Night is classic.  The video below is just a fun, tiny taste of an entire movie of great music, fun antics, and classic comedy.

It feels like summer in March at the movies – USATODAY.com

There are only a few weeks to wait until the much-anticipated release of The Hunger Games on the big screen.  I don’t ever remember looking forward to a movie release this much – ever.  That tells you just how much I love those books.  I am considering doing an entire series of posts on the books as a lead-in to the movie.  Yeah, I am that excited.  The characters, the plot, and the explored in the trilogy are that good.

The Shining – Filmcritic.com Movie Review

The Shining is my favorite horror movie.  Well, I suppose a case could be made that it isn’t a traditional horror movie.  It is more of a psychological thriller.  While I love the movie, as in so many cases, the book is so much better.

The movie is a sentimental favorite.  I first saw The Shining while attending a summer camp at King Mountain Ranch near Estes Park, Colorado.  Just prior to viewing The Shining with a group of friends on a dark summer night, I found out that the film was based on a hotel just on the other side of the mountain, the Stanley Hotel.  In fact, it was the Stanley Hotel that inspired Stephen King to write the novel The Shining upon which the film is very loosely based.

When several teenage girls set out to watch a scary movie with local ties in a setting eerie itself, the experience becomes something else altogether.  The experience of being scared silly became just as much of part of watching The Shining as the movie itself.  Then there was the setting.

How do I begin to explain King Mountain Ranch?  There is a lot of history associated with the property.  As with the Overlook in the movie and novel, it became a mountain getaway for the rich and famous.  King Mountain Ranch even included a private runway for private aircraft.  Beyond the similar history, the pure isolation of the Rocky Mountains, even in the middle of summer, added to the sense that the King Mountain Ranch wasn’t too different from the Overlook.

I can thank The Shining for a love of psychological thrillers and horror movies.  I just try to remember to read the book, if there is one, before I see the movie.  In the case of The Shining, the novel and the movie, the endings are different.  I’m not sure which ending I prefer.  What I do know is this:  I love the fact that the hotel is more of a character itself in the novel.  Then again, you can’t argue with the ending of the movie either.  See below.

After Christmas I read The Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins.  I can’t remember the last time I fell so in love with a series of books.  While I don’t normally trend towards the best-seller list, I can understand completely why all three books in the trilogy currently top it currently.  They are simply that good.  There is no way I could have waited for the last two books in the trilogy.  I’m just glad that I read the entire trilogy as a whole.

Where do I even begin?  The entire premise of the books is eerie, the characters are rich and wonderful, and the political undertones of the book struck a nerve, at least with me.  I’m not sure if Suzanne Collins intended for the books to have a political message, but they do for me.  It is hard for me to believe the books are considered young adult.  They are so rich, so complex, and so intense; it is not what one would normally expect from the young adult genre.

I will delve into greater details, including my favorite characters, at a later date.  This is a subject I intended to revisit from time to time.  There are just too many themes to explore.  In the meantime, I can’t wait for the movie!  My brother’s girlfriend K and I have a date to see it.  I cannot wait!  I don’t think I’ve ever been so excited for a movie premiere.

Five Broadway Bound Musicals I’m Looking Forward To « Girl Meets Broadway

While I never fully had an opportunity to participate in drama throughout high school, which is another story altogether, there is a special place in my heart for theatre and musical theatre in particular.  I grew up watching one of my aunts star in several community theatre projects.  In particular I loved her as Dolly Levi Gallagher from Hello, Dolly!.  As a five year-old, I became transfixed and obsessed.  I did not know that my aunt could sing like that!  A little later I had the pleasure of watching her in Grease and Nunsense, among others.  Those childhood afternoons and evenings spent with family watching incredibly small, local theatre productions truly did inspire me and continue to do so.

One of my favorite musicals of all time is Evita.  I love every single thing about it, including the movie version starring Madonna and Antonio Banderas.  In fact, as much as I hate to admit this, there was a time during my high school years that I could practically recite the entire movie.  I love it that much.  It is the only movie I’ve experienced in the movie theater three times.  Again, I became transfixed.  Imagine my surprise when I learned that Evita will be resurrected on Broadway this spring.  My only disappointment is that Patti LuPone will not be starring as Eva.  I’d love to have had the opportunity to see a performance of the original Broadway production of Evita.

After reading the post above, I have to admit that I’d love to see any of the productions included on Girl Meets Broadway’s list.  If there is anything that could lure me to a large metropolis, it would be theatre.  I have yet to be severely disappointed by any theatrical performance large or small.

Unfortunately, it is true that diaries are full of crap.  Click here to discover the full movie quote.  Click here to discover one of my favorite movie scenes of all time.  Bridget Jones’ Diary is one of my favorite movies of all time for too many reasons to mention here.  As if I hadn’t been head over heels for Mark Darcy before, Colin Firth as Mark Darcy became my favorite leading man in this scene.  What straight woman could resist a man who can kiss like that?  Sigh.  Not me, that’s for sure.

‘Nowhere Boy’ is so much more than a Lennon biopic – USATODAY.com

I’ve heard great things about this movie.  As someone interested in art, creativity, music, and of course, the Beatles, I have to check this out.

The lives of all the Beatles fascinate me almost as much as the music.  I wonder if Paul McCartney‘s early life will ever get the same type of treatment.  I can’t imagine the Beatles, together or solo, will ever be completely written out of pop culture.
